From touchdown to downtown – getting from Madrid-Barajas Airport to the city centre

Situated about 12 km from Madrid, Madrid-Barajas airport is massive. Besides, as the busiest airport in Spain, it's hardly a relaxing place to hang out, especially when you could be spending your time throwing back wine and snacking on tapas in the Spanish capital.

The airport’s four terminals are connected by a 24-hour free bus service for non-passengers (no boarding pass required) as well as a passenger link bus for travellers with boarding passes transferring from one terminal to another. Plentiful storefronts, restaurants, and ATMS make the airport a convenient place to snack and shop before your flight. Luggage storage is available at Terminals 1, 2 and 4.

Getting from the airport to Madrid’s city centre is made simple by how well-connected it is. You can grab the metro, the bus, the train or a taxi.

Metro

metro de Madrid by vladimixHop on metro line 8 from Madrid-Barajas (in any terminal) to Nuevos Ministerios in Madrid's city centre. The trip takes around 15 minutes. From there you can transfer to metro lines 6 and 10. Madrid's metro system runs from 06:00-01:30 approximately every five minutes during the day, every 10 minutes from 22:00 to 23:00, and every 15 minutes from 23:00-02:00.

Metro tickets with an airport supplement start at 4.50 euros and can cost up to five euros depending on your final destination. They’re available for purchase from ticket machines at the toll entry in the airport and metro stations throughout the city. If you plan on using the transport system a lot during your visit, spring for the Madrid Tourist Travel Pass for zone A 1, 2, 3, 5 or 7 days and you’ll be able to avoid paying a special fare for the airport.
