From touchdown to downtown – getting from Marco Polo Airport to Venice city centre

Marco Polo airport is located on the mainland, about five miles from Venice. You have several options for getting from the airport to the island of Venice, ranging from very expensive to budget-friendly.

Private water taxi

Water taxi by The Cow ManUsing a sleek private boat is a luxurious way to make your way to Venice. In terms of time, it’s the best option as these boats can whisk you into the city in about 25 minutes. They’re also the best option for getting you either exactly to your apartment’s doorstep or as close as they possibly can, depending on the location of your flat.

If you have a lot of luggage, a private water taxi is also a good choice, as well as the most pricey. A one-way trip into Venice will cost between 110-125 euros. There’s a kiosk inside the arrivals hall at the airport where you can book your water taxi, then it’s just a short walk down to the dock. Water taxi transport can also be pre-booked via the internet. If you want or need to be taken directly to your apartment, this is the only way possible. All the other choices require either a transfer to another boat or walking the remaining distance from where you are dropped off.

Alilaguna public boat

The Alilaguna boat line runs public boats from the airport to Venice. The cost is 15 euros per person one way, and 17 euros for a round trip. It’s relatively inexpensive, but can be time-consuming since this boat makes several stops along the way between the airport and St. Mark’s. The Alilaguna boats run on a schedule, so you may have to wait for a boat. Transport time between the airport and Venice can take up to an hour and a half. It’s an economical choice, but not quick. Also, depending on where your apartment is located, you may have to walk quite a distance, including over bridges, with your luggage. The ticket desk is in the arrivals hall of the airport.

ATVO express bus

Atvo by beccafawleyThis bus, run by a private company, is like a chartered bus, with comfortable seats and a luggage storage compartment beneath the bus. The 20-minute non-stop trip from the airport to Piazzale Roma, the bus terminal in Venice, runs three times an hour. Cost one way is 6 euros per person.

From Piazzale Roma you can catch the local public boat, the vaporetto, hire a private water taxi, or continue on by foot to get to your apartment. Tickets may be purchased from a machine located near the bus stop, which is on the street directly in front of you as you exit the doors of the airport. This bus also makes trips to the airport from Piazzale Roma three times an hour beginning around 5am.

ACTV City bus

The city bus line number 5 goes from the airport to Piazzale Roma, the bus terminal in Venice. It runs several times per hour, taking about 35 minutes. This is a typical city bus, with lots of passengers, makes lots of stops along the way, and you have all your luggage right on the bus with you. These buses, not to be confused with the ATVO bus, are usually orange or white and green. You can buy tickets at the Tabacci shop (marked with a big T on a sign above it) located in the arrivals hall of the airport.

It’s important to know that once you’re on the bus, you must validate your ticket using the machine on the bus. The bus stop for the ACTV buses is also right outside the main door of the airport, but down the street to the left just a bit.

Regular land taxi cars are available from the airport into Venice, stopping at Piazzale Roma which is the terminal for all things motorised coming into or out of Venice. The taxi stand is right in front of the airport, just outside the main door. You can expect the fees to be around 35-40 euros, and about 25 minutes transportation time.

This is convenient option, with no waiting on bus or boat schedules, and you don’t have to walk down to the dock to find it. However, just like using one of the bus methods to arrive in Venice, you must remember that your destination is Piazzale Roma. From there you must take a vaporetto or walk to your apartment.
