From touchdown to downtown – getting from Vienna International Airport to the city centre
Vienna International Airport is located about 12 miles (19 km) east of the heart of Austria’s capital. With the number of ways to get downtown as diverse as the travellers taking them, visitors have the luxury of choosing the way into the city that suits them best. Here’s a run-down of the varied options.
Door to door – airport taxis
If you have the euros to spare, a taxi is undoubtedly the easiest and most convenient way to get door-to-door from the airport to your downtown destination. Just beyond the baggage claim and past the main doors you’ll find a taxi rank, with a cab waiting to whisk you to Wien for between 35€ and 40€.
Taxis booked in advance typically cost around 30€ and - believe it or not - the airport of this capital city is still small enough that your driver will wait for you at arrivals with a sign bearing your name. While more and more taxis do accept cards, it’s probably best to have enough euros on hand to pay for your fare. See http://www.airportdriver.at
The bargain option – S7
A set of train tracks runs from the city centre to the airport, and while there is
a special airport direct link train that makes use of them, it’s a well-known fact among thrifty locals that a commuter train runs along them too. For a grand total of 4€, travellers can hop on the S7 Schnellbahn
at the airport and 26 minutes (and a few stops) later arrive at WIEN MITTE. This is a transport crossroads at the Landstrasse underground stop in downtown Vienna that is well connected to other public transport options, for which the S7 ticket is also good.
After collecting your bags, follow the Schnellbahn sign (it looks like a ‘S’ in a circle) towards the tracks. You can buy tickets from the automated machines at the top of the escalator and pay for them with either cash or cards. Make sure you validate your ticket (the machine will ask you) when purchasing it, as you won’t want to run into any problems once on board!
Trains run daily between 04:00 and midnight. Those to Vienna leave in the ‘Floridsdorf’ direction at 17 and 42 minutes past the hour and those back to the airport leave at 15 and 45 minutes past the hour in the ‘Flughafen Wien’ or ‘Wolfsthal’ direction. While this option does
take longer than the others, the price really just cannot be beaten. See http://www.oebb.at

Downtown in a flash – City Airport Train
The City Airport Train (known in Vienna as the CAT) offers a direct express link between the airport and the city centre. Once you pick up your luggage in the airport’s baggage claim, follow the green CAT signs and you will soon be on your way! Travelling along the same tracks as the S7 commuter train, the CAT is much faster because it makes no stops.
Operating between roughly 06:00 and 23:30, travel time runs 16 minutes flat with comfortable and modern trains leaving the airport every half hour (note—at 6 and 36 minutes past the hour) and arriving at their own hub of WIEN MITTE.
And when it’s time to head back home? Take the CAT and comfortably check in to your flight, bags included, before even setting foot in the airport! Operating between roughly 05:30 and 23:00, trains leave the city every half hour (note—at 6 and 36 minutes past the hour). One-way tickets cost 11€, round trip tickets 17€. You can purchase tickets online in advance or in person at the CAT terminal. Children up to age 15 travel free!

Last but not least – Vienna Airport lines
Another option that’s quicker than the commuter train and cheaper than a taxi or the CAT is the bus service available from Vienna Airport Lines. With three lines from the airport to different city locations, travellers have an affordable and comfortable way to get to various places across the capital.
After collecting your bags at baggage claim, follow the signs for buses. For the 22-minute journey to the downtown destination Schwedenplatz, buses run from roughly 04:50 to 00:20 and leave the airport every 30 minutes at 20 and 50 minutes past the hour. Other lines will take you beyond downtown like to the 22nd
(Kagran) or 15th
districts (Westbahnhof). You can purchase tickets directly from the driver in the bus. One-way tickets cost 8€ for adults and 4€ for children, while round trips cost 13€ and 6,50€ respectively. Children under six ride free.
No matter which option you choose, you’ll be sipping your Wiener Melange
and tasting your first Sacher Torte
